Liquori Toro - The Centerba Toro is the story of a family and of the territory in which it historically has its centuries-old roots.
The history of the Toro Distillery is inextricably linked to that of its Centerba Forte liqueur.
In 1817 Beniamino Toro began his activity as a liqueur producer in his pharmacy in Tocco da Casauria, a town in the Abruzzo part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. The pharmacist, originally from Cansano, had moved to Tocco da Casauria at the beginning of the 19th century to carry out his business; it is here that in all likelihood its destiny crossed with that of the centerba, an extract of herbs, a legacy left to the territory by the monks of the nearby Benedictine abbey of San Clemente a Casauria. The fame of Centerba and its medicinal qualities exploded on the occasion of the cholera of Naples in 1836, a circumstance in which it was used as a remedy against nausea and as a disinfectant, fame perpetuated to this day by its quality of liqueur after meal: however, it is still in the memory of the oldest among us the use that was made of it in all homes as a medicine.
From father to son for six generations, the Taurus have succeeded one another at the helm of the company, most recently dr. Enrico; today, after 200 years, the manager of the company is not a member of the family. Today the liqueur factory, equipped with all the most modern technologies, produces in addition to Centerba Forte many high quality liqueurs of the Abruzzo and national tradition, continuing to combine tradition and innovation by grafting traditional methods of maceration of herbs and roots with "technology 4.0" of bottling and packaging machinery. In particular, Centerba Toro is still produced by drying and macerating the herbs collected in the summer by our experts on the Majella and Morrone mountains.
The Centerba has been included as a typical product of Tocco da Casauria in the Atlas of Traditional Agri-food Products of the Abruzzo Region, filed with the Ministry of Agricultural and Forestry Policies (Official Gazette n193 of 18 August 2004). The Toro Distillery is located at the beginning of the Tremonti Gorges, formed by the last offshoots of the Gran Sasso and those of Mount Morrone, that is, in the stretch of the Tiburtina Valeria state road that runs alongside the town of Tocco da Casauria.
The aromatic and healthy herbs, which are used to produce and characterize the liqueurs and distillates of this factory, they are collected on the mountains that overlook it but above all on Mount Morrone which forms the backdrop to the plateau on which Tocco da Casauria rises, the extreme edge of the province of Pescara. This modern and well-equipped company makes use of the most recent discoveries of the liquor technique to offer ever better products and to guarantee a quality that meets the needs of the market. But the secular secret of the herbs that rest in the macerators and of the discontinuous distillation, is always the one that has been handed down from father to son. Knowing how to renew oneself, without compromising on traditions, is a constant commitment of the Toro Distillery and is, at the same time, an absolute guarantee for the consumers of its products. The Abruzzo Region recognizes Centerba as a typical product of Tocco da Casauria.
